Modern Magick- 11 lessons in the high Magickal arts.

By Donald Michael Kraig.

Llewellyn. (publisher)

An excellent book, full of useful exercises and Rituals based on the Golden dawn system of magic.

Ideal for the beginner or as a refresher for the more experienced.

This weighty volume is highly recommended to most of my students, interested in this type of Ritual. It is clearly set out, and written in plain language. All the rituals can be understood, and practised after reading and walking through them just a couple times , and memorised easily There is even plain instructions on Goetia and other types of Evocation, Sex Magick and instructions for making some of the Golden Dawn alter equipment it even has pronunciation guides for the more difficult words used in Qabalistic and Enochian rituals so if you weren't sure if you have been saying something right or not, here is where you will find out.

I met the Author in 1994 in San Francisco where we became friends, He is a really genuine person with a lot to contribute to this field of Magick. I had the book before then, and I still believe it to be one of the most readable books on high Magick, at an affordable price.

Kali- the black Goddess of Dakshineswar.

By Elizabeth U. Harding.

Nicholas Hayes ( publisher)

An intriguing and powerful insight into the development of Kali Worship. This book can be read on a devotional level, by all those exploring the dark aspect of the Goddess.

It contains a wealth of information about the types of worship prayer and offerings conducted at the Dakshineswar Temple, just outside Calcutta. The book was written by a Western devotee of the Goddess, and contains many devotional prayers and poems written by Ramprasad and Ramakrishna, as well as details of some of the God intoxicated Saints who experienced the Dark mother on a daily basis. This is a lovely book, for those interested in Indian Mysticism and Religion, as well as those interested in Kali as the Dark mother. Some may regard the devotional poetry as a bit nonsensical unless one can tap into the mindset off the God intoxicated Indian Saints who wrote these powerful words.

Perhaps not everyone's cup of tea, but for those who love the dark mother, by whatever name you call her, a potent and thought provoking book. Upon finishing the last line of this book an overwhelming urge came over me, to go there, to be part of it, to become intoxicated by her power, as Ramakrishna had been... One day maybe!

An interestingand lively book full of mythic symbolism relating to European Witchcraft and the practices of the old Religion. This book covers many aspects of older style Witchcraft, relating very little to the modern Wicca movement, as practiced by present day Gardnerian and Alexandrian Covens. For this reason I found this book very refreshing. There is a wealth of information on the traditional practices ofthe British Isles, Scandinavia, Germany and Holland. There is much lore on Weaving, herb Magic, God and Goddess traditions, Shamanism and Faery lore. As well as Historical documentation from a variety of sources, relating to the practice of Witchcraft and Shamanism in Europe. I found this book full of interesting and valuable snippets of information, written in an easyand light hearted style. A fascinating read, withoutunnecessary padding, which one often finds in similar books. A delight to read and highly recommended for all those interested in Pagan practices, past and present.

Essential Reiki- A complete guide to an ancient healing art

By Diane Stein

Crossing press (publisher)

A fabulous book,Most books on Reiki are complete twaddle, with little to offer the serious reader, but Diane Stein has managed to put together a very readable and entertaining book on the subject.

For those unfamiliar with this healing system, Reiki is a powerful method of hands on healing and transference of Universal life force energy, discovered in Japan by Mikao Usui, early this Century. Reiki is unlike any other system of healing as the Student must first be attuned to theReiki energy, making it an Initiatory/ Mystery traditionThe information regardingReiki History, is now understood to be mostly bogus and must be examined on a Mythic level. But the rest of this very practical book is a valuable aid to the Reiki practitioner or interested healer. The Author has even included the secret Reiki symbols, for the first time in a book meant for non initiates, which when first published caused great controversy . Hand positions for treatment are included, Orientalideas on healing, the Chakra system, and energy work, Buddhist and Taoist thoughts on the subtle system are discussed, in relation to Chi and it's cultivation. A very useful book packed with information. The best bookon practical Reiki I have found, I recommend thisbookwholeheartedly to all my Reiki Students.

Foundations of Tibetan Mysticism

By Lama Anagarika Govinda

Rider (publisher)
A fabulous book  which examines the intricacies of Tibetan Buddhism, This is the most comprehensive book on  the Mystic lore of Tibet, which I  have read so far. Where most authors on these subjects Bimble around hinting at the subject from a safe distance, Anagarika Govinda Jumps right in  with both feet.  He pulls widely from ancient writings on Tibetan Tantra, bringing them up to date and to life. This book is very clearly written, with sections on the Chakra system and the Dhyani Buddhas, It even contains a pronunciation guide to the Tibetan Alphabet, which most Westerners have difficulty understanding, but in this book all the Tibetan words are written Phonetically followed by the actual way it ought to be spelled, this gives much insight as like Sanskrit and Hebrew the word construction tells us a lot about the Spiritual qualities of the letters used. A mine of information, for both beginner and more advanced students. I  would not recommend this book for the general Occult Student, but for those seriously interested in the various forms of Tantra and Buddhist philosophy, this book makes excellent reading.

Order  Condensed Chaos

Condensed Chaos -an introduction to Chaos Magic

By Phil Hine
New Falcon Publications

A very interesting book, hailed as the most readable on this particular branch of Magick, With a forward by Pete Carroll. Phil Hine is regarded by many as one of  the  foremost experts on Chaos and its Magical techniques, and his book contains many ideas and theories used by modern Magical practitioners. I  have found many of the techniques first developed by Chaos Magicians creeping into Magical  groups and Covens of all persuasions. A lot of this book contains down to Earth information on  Magical Psychology the persona of the Magician, Mask work, Assumption of Godforms, Sigil Magick, Servitors or Serving Spirits as well as much practical advise and common sense relating to the pitfalls and pleasures of the practising Magician . Before Phil Hine  became well known in this branch of Magic, I worked with him in The Circle of Stars Temple, a Pagan Magical group he started in Leeds, in the late eighties through to 1990, and we have remained friends. I  recommend this book for anyone with an interest in Modern Magical practices and techniques. Many people are put off by the term Chaos, but Phil Hine's book is well Written, balanced and very sensible in it's approach to this style of Magic k.

When God was a Woman

By Merlin Stone

Harcourt Brace (publisher)

An incredible book,  which I have read Three times in  the last three years . Previously titled the Paradise Papers, it gives much information on the Goddess cultures of the Ancient Near and Middle East. Drawing from Historical and Archaeological  documentation. Written in  a powerful style, meant to challenge the reader. The Religious practices of Ancient Egypt, Israel, Canaan, Babylon, Mesopotamia and Anatolia are all covered in relation to the Religion of the great Goddess , her  worship and later suppression by the followers of the Monotheistic male religions. Anyone interested the development of Goddess Culture from it's early beginnings will find this book, well researched, powerful and inspiring, as well as threatening , you will feel angry as well as saddened by the things done to the priestesses and followers of the great Mother, all in the name of War and conquest. The near and Middle East is a very important place in the history of Religious developments, and  I Wholeheartedly recommend this book, to anyone with an academic interest in Ancient History of this particular region, Women's Spirituality, Paganism and Archaeology .
